DAEDALUS

Distributed control and simulAtion platform to support an Ecosystem of DigitAL aUtomation developerS

Objectives

Daedalus is conceived to enable the full exploitation of the CPS’ virtualized intelligence concept, through the adoption of a completely distributed automation platform based on IEC-61499 standard, fostering the creation of a Digital Ecosystem that could go beyond the current limits of manufacturing control systems and propose an ever-growing market of innovative solutions for the design, engineering, production and maintenance of plants’ automation.

One of Daedalus objectives is to show, through several and complementary proof-of-concept showcases, that the applicability of the project technologies is not only feasible but also effective, simple and easy to re-apply in several other domains. Through the explicit involvement of future Complementors into the project, Daedalus will foster its widespread acceptance.

The project will incubate an embryonal stage of the Automation Ecosystem it envisions, involving explicitly future Complementors through the creation of a European Competence Centre for IEC-61499 and the deployment of several proof-of-concepts applications of the platform: Daedalus’ Showcases, designed to explore the following scenarios:

  • At device level: Complex automation devices transformed into IEC-61499 intelligent CPS
  • At agent level: The IEC-61499 encapsulation of AGVs to become mobile-CPS at the service of the shop floor
  • At machine/equipment level: Robotic picking islands orchestrated to satisfy the optimization needs of the intralogistics
  • At plant level: A small-scale industrial pilot plant for de-manufacturing optimized and re-configurable in real-time
  • At factory level: A “Factory-in-a-room”, the small scale representation of how Daedalus’ platform could encompass all the functional areas of a factory automation
